Example Hypothesis

Hypothesis:

I think that if I add no liquids to compost and bread in a zip lock bag, it will grow mold the slowest of all treatments. Adding oil will make it slightly faster, adding water will be even faster and soda will grow mold the fastest of all.

The bags with oil will grow slightly faster than the bags with no liquid. This is because there will be very little water for the mold's cytoplasm in the cell, but the oil will provide lipids. The lipids can be used for cell membranes and as a fuel for the mitochondria.

The bags with water will grow more quickly than the bags with no extra liquids because all living things need water. The cytoplasm in the cells is mostly made of water. Water helps to keep the cell temperature, allows chemical reactions and keeps the cell shape. It must be humid or wet for mold to grow.

The bags with soda in them may do the best because the extra sugar will provide a food source for the mold. Sugar is a carbohydrate that provides fuel for the mitochondria, which provides energy for producing proteins, copying DNA and organelles for cell growth. However, it is possible the preservatives in the soda might slow down the mold growth.
