Thornton Junior High School

From the Assistant Principals

Welcome back to school!  Ms. Renoir and I are looking to have an excellent school year and are excited to work with the great group of students we have here at Thornton. My schedule this year is again split between Horner and Thornton. For the first semester, I will be at Thornton on Mondays and Tuesdays and every other Wednesday. During the second semester, I will be here  Thursdays and Fridays and continue the every other Wednesday schedule.

Ms. Renoir and I are delighted to be able to continue our work helping students succeed at the junior high level and preparing them for success in high school and beyond.

In these first few weeks of school, we have had the chance to visit classrooms, and we are very impressed with the level of student engagement.

When you have an opportunity, we ask that you please review with your child the rules and student responsibilities in the student planner so we are all on the same page when it comes to what is expected at Thornton.

Following are some general reminders:

  • Please do not drop off or pick up students on Thornton Ave or directly in the parking lots. Please use the pick up drop off loop instead, as it is safer for pedestrians and vehicles.
  • It is vital that students remember to cross the street in a safe manner: use crosswalks, don't jaywalk, don't begin to cross when you cannot finish crossing safely in the amount of time remaining.
  • Once students leave school, they may not return to campus without a parent. This means students cannot go across the street after school and then return to campus for a ride or to watch a game or go to a dance.
  • Students are not allowed to be on other schools' campuses before 4pm without a parent accompanying them, and the student and parent must check in at the school office for a visitor pass.
  • Students who ride a bike or skateboard to or from school must wear a helmet. It is the law.
  • Cell phones must be turned off and put away when students arrive to the campus. They may be turned on and used after the end of the school day. The same applies to school dances--they must be off and put away during the dance and can be used when it is over.
  • We have homework club that is supervised by a credentialed teacher every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2:40-3:40 in room 39.
  • The library is open from 7:30am-3:30pm on most school days.

We are really looking forward to another fabulous year with such amazing staff and students! Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns; we have an open door policy.
