When you go for a checkup, your doctor uses a stethoscope to listen carefully to your heart. A healthy heart makes a lub-dub sound with each beat. This sound comes from the valves shutting on the blood inside the heart.
Even though your heart is inside you, there is a cool way to know it's working from the outside. It's your pulse. You can find your pulse by lightly pressing on the skin anywhere there's a large artery running just beneath your skin. Two good places to find it are on the side of your neck and the inside of your wrist, just below the thumb.

Women’s History Month in the United States grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa.
A few years later, the idea had caught on within communities, school districts and organizations across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.

Tobacco use is NOT an equal opportunity killer. There are 10 times more tobacco and smoking ads in primarily black neighborhoods, including coupons and discounted prices, bringing tobacco closer and easier to access for young African Americans. Tobacco use contributes to the top three leading causes of death for African Americans: heart disease, cancer and stroke. This is one reason why Thornton is a tobacco free school, take the pledge to be tobacco free today! Brought to you by the TUPE Team!
I, Too
By Langston Hughes, 1902-1967
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

For those of you who are purchasing lunch please remember to walk to the Multi-Purpose room and form a single file line. No cutting or buying food for others. Please remember to say hello to our cafeteria staff and be polite; a simple "thank you" goes a long way!
Students are allowed to eat where there are picnic tables and benches. Students are not allowed to be behind the locker room, gym or behind the portables at the back of the school
Food and drink may not be consumed in the basketball courts. This is your PE classroom, please help keep it clean.
Lastly, let's not feed the birds, on purpose or accidentally. Put you trash in the bins and don't leave food on the ground or on the tables.
Enjoy your lunch!
